Manchester United eye up two European starlets

Manchester United scouts are set to cast their eyes over two Croatian teenage starlets, and will have them watched this weekend.

United representatives will be in attendance at the Stadion Poljud in Split when Mateo Kovacic and Mario Situm line up for Dinamo Zagreb against Hajduk Split.

Reds scouts were alerted to the 17-year-old midfielder Kovacic and 19-year-old striker Situm recently, but United will be among several big clubs represented at the game.

Kovacic has been likened to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi back in Croatia, and reports claim he will be out of contract in the summer.

It is thought that a number of big European clubs, including Arsenal, are also interested in the duo.

Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook resigns over email scandal

Garry Cook has resigned as chief executive of Manchester City after the club completed their investigation into allegations he sent an offensive email to the mother and representative of Nedum Onuoha.

He had originally denied sending the message, claiming his account was hacked, but decided to offer his resignation after an investigation by City found there was foundation to the allegations.

Cook has released the following statement: “I am privileged to have held my position at Manchester City and to have experienced the opportunities that it has presented. The privilege is in part offset however by the significant personal focus which has at times, detracted from the magnificent achievements of those working at the football club.

“It is that factor, together with my error of judgement in this matter that has prompted me to reach this decision, which I believe is in the best interests of the football club.

“I wish Roberto and his team and all of the fans and supportive partners of the Club the very best for exciting times ahead. I would also like to put on record my unreserved thanks to Sheikh Mansour, Khaldoon Al Mubarak and the board and all of the very talented staff at the club for their support throughout my tenure at Manchester City. I know the club will go from strength to strength.”

Manchester City handed tough Champions League draw

Champions League debutants Manchester City have been drawn against German side Bayern Munich, Spanish outfit Villarreal and Italian club Napoli.

Last season’s finalists Manchester United will compete in Group C along with Benfica, Basel and Otelul Galati.

Arsenal, who qualified via victory over Udinese, will face Marseille, Olympiakos and Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea were assigned to Group E with Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen and Genk in Thursday’s draw in Monaco.

Spanish four-time winners and current holders Barcelona are in Group H along with seven-time European champions AC Milan from Italy, Belarusian side BATE Borisov – making their second appearance in the competition – and group stage debutants Viktoria Plzen from the Czech Republic.

Barca’s domestic rivals Real Madrid, who have won the tournament a record nine times, face competition from French side Lyon, Dutch champions Ajax and Dinamo Zagreb from Croatia.

Italian side Inter Milan, who won the competition in 2010, have been presented with a relatively straight-forward group containing Russian club CSKA Moscow, French outfit Lille and Turkish team Trabzonspor, who were entered into the tournament on Wednesday after Fenerbahce were withdrawn in the wake of an ongoing investigation into match fixing.

Group G contains Portuguese side Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk from Ukraine, Russian club Zenit St Petersburg and APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus.

Of all the English sides, City’s draw appears to be the toughest.

Although Bayern Munich and Villarreal both had to come through play-offs to qualify for the group stages, each has a wealth of Champions League experience and talented players at their disposal.

Napoli finished third in Serie A last season and have been able to hold on to the core of the team that got them there.

However football administration officer Brian Marwood said that there was excitement at the club from simply being involved.

“It’s a fantastic group. It’s going to be extremely competitive and I genuinely believe there are four teams that can compete for the two spots on an even keel,” he said.

“This is a fantastic part of Manchester City’s history to be part of the competition and our fans will enjoy every minute of this year’s Champions League tournament.

“We have a squad now that is blessed with great talent, spirit and endeavour and we feel we are more than capable of competing with the best in this tournament.

“This is new to us as a club but we have players with Champions League experience and they know what playing in this tournament is all about.”

United’s group appears the easiest on paper, and though Arsenal have to play German champions Borussia Dortmund, they should be confident of overcoming both Marseille and Olympiakos.

“We’ve had great success in the competition over the years and we are looking forward to it immensely,” said United chief executive David Gill.

“I got a text from Sir Alex and he is happy, we have a new Romanian team, congratulations to them and we look forward to going there. They are the new boys and we are happy to get that draw. We are comfortable with the draw we’ve been given.

“We have a young team and a vibrant squad and we feel we are well equipped for the months ahead.”

Chelsea too should view themselves as more than capable of progressing to the knockout stages in Andre Villas-Boas’ first season in charge.

Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder believes he is for sale

Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder has been quoted as saying that Inter Milan would sell him for “the right amount”.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester clubs United and City, although both have denied having made an approach for the player.

“All I know is that Inter need money and apparently I’m for sale for the right amount,” he told Voetbal International magazine.

“I’ve not spoken with City or United so I cannot say anything about my future.”

He added: “Next week I play with the Oranje [Dutch national side] against England and then I have five days off. I hope that then everything will be cleared up.”

Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reported on Friday that City had signed the midfielder.

City boss Roberto Mancini dismissed the reports following his side’s 3-2 defeat to United in the Community Shield on Sunday.

“No,” he said. “It is not true. He is an Inter Milan player. We never spoke about him.”

However, the former Inter manager did state that he was looking to add to his personnel before the close of the summer transfer window.

“We need to complete our squad,” said the Italian.

“We have another 23 days until the end of the market in order to achieve the target we had at the start of pre-season.”

In July, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said his club had “no real interest” in signing Dutchman Sneijder.

His comments followed reports that claimed a deal of around
