Court bans Samsung tablet sales

Samsung has been told it cannot sell its new Galaxy Tab tablet computer in Germany after a court ruled that its design “too closely” resembles Apple’s iPad2.

The ruling by the Dusseldorf state court, however, only applies to direct sales from the South Korea-based company, meaning distributors who acquire the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from abroad can resell them in Germany.

Apple had taken Samsung to court over its Galaxy line, arguing the design is too close a copy of its own products.

Samsung said in a statement it will appeal against the ruling, which it said “severely limits consumer choice in Germany”.

In August, the court ruled in favour of Apple, forcing Samsung to withdraw its tablet from the European market. It later determined the injunction only applied to sales in Germany, where it had not yet been launched.

“We also believe that by imposing an injunction based on this very generic design right, this ruling restricts design innovation and progress in the industry,” Samsung said.

Judge Johanna Brueckner-Hofmann said in her ruling that Samsung “did not keep the necessary distance” in its design, the news agency dapd reported.

Apple patented its design in 2004, and Ms Brueckner-Hofmann cited products from Asus, Acer and Toshiba as examples of tablet computers that have a clearly different design.

Apple and Samsung are involved in a series of legal disputes in countries around the world over allegations that each copies the other’s technology.

Nissan develops cheaper car charger

Nissan has developed a charger for electric vehicles that costs about half the price of the current product and is also smaller than the one available just now, making it more affordable and easier to install.

According to officials at Nissan, Japan’s second biggest carmaker, the new charger will go on sale in the country in November and will reach markets in the US and Europe on later dates which have yet to be announced.

Yokohama-based Nissan, which makes the Leaf electric vehicle, is targeting the sale of 5,000 of the new chargers in Japan by the end of March 2016.

Time for Congress to act on jobs: White House aide

A top aide to President Barack Obama says it’s time for Congress to take action to create jobs.

White House chief of staff Bill Daley says that in the president’s speech to lawmakers Thursday evening, he will propose innovative ideas for growing the economy. He says the American people are demanding that something be done to address persistent unemployment.

Daley says that with Congress’ summer break over, lawmakers must “do something and not say no to everything.”

Daley said the president’s American Job Act will be formally introduced next week. He didn’t reveal its details, but said its initiatives would be paid for and he hinted it would include higher revenue from wealthier people.

Mobiles become emergency data network

Mobile phones could soon be helping in the aftermath of disasters by becoming an ad-hoc message passing network.

Computer scientist Thomas Wilhelm has developed software that lets data hop from phone to phone.

Messages sent via the application gradually migrates towards its intended target to keep communication going when other routes are closed.

The system could also help protesters in nations that routinely switch off networks to quell unrest.

Called Auto-BAHN, the project was unveiled at the DefCon hacker conference in Las Vegas in early August.

To pass messages the software uses the Bluetooth short-range radio technology and wi-fi that are ubiquitous on smartphones.

After a disaster, owners of phones that have the Auto-BAHN application can search for other users of it and pass on a message. Once sent, the message propagates across the network of other Auto-BAHN using phones until it gets to its intended target.

It could prove helpful during disasters and alert emergency services to the location of survivors.

Mr Wilhelm has produced an application that puts Auto-BAHN on Android phones and is working on one for the iPhone.

The applications are just to prove the concept works, he said, as he is trying to convince smartphone makers to have a similar system included as standard on their gadgets.

You know you’re from Facebook if …

If your Facebook friends fondly recall that ice cream shop downtown or the crazy guy who used to dance around the park, you’ve probably read about it lately on Facebook.

And it might be a sign of things to come.

Facebook seems to be experimenting with some changes to the News Feed at the same time the site’s longstanding “You Know You’re From …” groups are hitting a viral resurgence.

The result? Lots of posts that users probably think are just appearing on the group’s wall are instead getting pushed into the News Feed of all their friends.

Facebook confirmed Monday that it’s working on some tweaks to the News Feed that may be making the feed a lot more robust (some might say cluttered) in the near future.

“We are currently testing a feature within News Feed that gives people the ability to see what their friends are commenting on and ‘liking’ as these actions are being taken on Facebook,” a spokesman said in an e-mail. “This test includes a small percentage of Facebook users, just a fraction of a percent.

“In the coming weeks, as we learn more from this test, we’ll keep making improvements and may expand it to more people.”

In the meantime, not everybody’s thrilled about the work in progress.

“Wow that #YouKnowYoureFrom thing on #facebook got really old really quick,” one Twitter user wrote Thursday morning. There were a couple of more tweets, but they can’t be quoted in polite company.

Some users who had been posting to “You Know You’re From” pages (and most cities of any size probably have one by now) said they had no idea that their friends were seeing all of the comments. Typically, writing on the wall of a group or fan page keeps the conversation there.
